GAI Award Winner 2009: THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE

John Planck Ltd have had another successful year at the GAI/RIBA Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2009.
They were outright winners in the Established Buildings Category for their exceptional work on the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.
This is the Guilds most prestigious award as it recognises specifications that are proven in practice and continue to deliver the same high performance as the day they were installed.
Architects Dixon Jones / BDP were faced with sourcing ironmongery which maintained the tradition and splendour of the House, at the same time making sure that the ironmongery was compliant with all the latest requirement standards. The logistics of the ironmongery were complex with eight building contractors fitting over 2000 doors.
John Plancks supplied satin stainless steel to the back of house areas and polished bronze fittings to the front of house areas. Purpose made fittings were produced to match historic patterns. All areas used high-tech concealed access control products working alongside overhead, concealed and underfloor door closing devices. Disabled entrances and toilets doors were controlled via Fusion low energy automatic door operating devices switched with touch sensitive pull handles. All areas of hardware continue to work without any problems due to the correct level of specification employed.

GAI AWARD WINNER 2009: THE DORCHESTER HOTEL

At the Awards Ceremony John Planck Ltd also received a Commended Award in the Public Buildings Category for their work on the Alain Ducasse Restaurant @ The Dorchester Hotel, London.
John Planck Ltd were approached by Hunter Evans Architects to prepare a unique, quality specification for the hardware and automatic doors. The choice of ironmongery was critical due to the complexity of most situations and the special client requirements.

The main restaurant area has pairs of 70mm thick, 2800mm high, glazed timber doors which fold in half and then slide in to secret panels in the walls. On the opposite side of the restaurant there are banks of doors which hinge back in to purpose made voids and are designed to blend in with the rest of the panelled walls, making them virtually undetectable. The busy routes into and out of the kitchen are serviced with automatic opening doors with heavy duty kick switches.

The unique door to the wine cellar is fully automatic activated by switches hidden under the floor and proximity readers concealed behind the timber panelling. The door itself is nearly 100mm thick and curved. The pneumatic operator makes for completely silent opening as the original design brief was to design a door which appears from nowhere and opens as if by magic.

NEW CRM SOFTWARE FOR ARCHITECTURAL DIVISION

John Monaghan Ltd and John Planck Ltd have recently introduced Project Sales Achiever (PSA) their new CRM software.

PSA is a very sophisticated system that not only stores company and contact details, but unlike most CRM packages it also records projects, quotations and actions including letters, emails, meetings and telephone calls. The system then identifies the links between the different records showing their multiple relationships and allowing you to navigate between them.

Replacing Navisions Relationship Management, PSA will aid internal and external communication by providing more accurate and easily assessable information. A weekly import from Glenigans updates the software with the latest project information including new and updated projects and company information. PSA even automatically allocates a rep to each record according to its geographical location.

By capturing this information sales leads are identified and targeted quickly and easily, increasing the chance of a sale. Marketing is also aided by having the ability to identify target markets quickly and easily and carrying out mass mailings with accuracy and ease.

On the new software John Monaghan commented:
Whilst the implementation of PSA presented many challenges, we are already starting to reap the benefits of better internal and external communication and having good information which will ultimately lead to a more focused sales force.
